Upson County was created in 1824 from land ceded to Georgia by the Creek Indians at the Treaty of Indian Springs in 1821. The County was named in honor of Stephen Upson, a prominent attorney who lived in Lexington, Georgia, and was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1786.
