Yep, there was one in is Lousiana or Louisville or something like that and it was flagged.
And that link you gave describes the same car in the link I gave.

Man, don't people have a life?

It still makes me wonder why would someone spend there time doing something like that.

Thank you so much for letting me know!

Actually, all they try and do is get someone to wire them a deposit $300-$500 which some people will risk for a great deal. I've of the scammer actually convincing the buyer that they didn't need payment in full, a $500 deposit would hold it, further convincing the buyer it's a legitimate deal. Craigslist is free, maybe two or three people actually send a deposit, you've made a $1000 and the FBI Internet Fraud Division will be the first one to tell you they have absolutely no time or manpower to track down these small scale scammers.

If you don't believe people are that gullible, look how many times someone ask about one of these "super" deals on this forum (no offense to the OP).

I contacted the "seller" just for the heck of it.
I told him I was interested.
Originally, I told him I would like to see the car,
but his reply had nothing to do with "seeing" the car.
This is his reply to me:
Hello and sorry for the late reply. Hope I'm not too late and you didn't already purchased another car.

For sale is my '01 Mazda MX-5 Miata, convertible, in immaculate condition with only 34,400 miles, rust free, no scratch and hasn't been involved in any accident. Engine is a 1.8L L4 FI DOHC 16V with an automatic trans. The interior looks great (never smoked in). This car needs nothing and comes with a CLEAN title.
I want this transaction to be smooth and I don't have much time at my disposal to waste my time with endless discussions. I believe $3,300.00 (not negotiable) is more than a fair price.
You can reach me at (701) 205-4147 or you can email me if you are interested.

Thank you,

Lt. Flaum, Richard

Over the last few years I've noticed hundreds of Craigslist car scams in the $4000-$5000 range. Is that the pricing range for suckers or something?

23rd July 2009, 15:44

Ha, they are always in the "Service."

Cute. How is it that when I tried to post two similar ads for my old car on CL, they wouldn't allow it? I see this all the time, but I guess they're pretty good about catching legitimate honest people trying to post regionally, but give the scammers a free ride.

Baston-Rob

The scam ads all seem to have common body copy but the ad headers are changed.

In the ads mentioned above all the scammer did was change the selling price in the ad heading. One ad in the header the price was, $3356 the next ad $3357. By doing this I guess the ads don't get rejected.

Man, whoever this scammer is, he is whack.
getting my hopes up and everything.
Jeez.

Oh well, at least we all know he ain't real.
And the car too.

How true is that - I double post and the CL police show up at my door. These scammers list the car 25 times and nothing happens!

A bit off topic but still relevant - how do you watermark digital photos? Since some of my cars that in the gallery get used regularly in CL ads, I'd like to watermark them to maybe cut down on the illegal usage.

They do it for <$5,000 because at five grand it becomes a felony wire-fraud transaction, and the feds will go after them.

They all have the text as an image, it seems, rather than as "text."

A $9,000 car advertised for $4,000 shouldn't "get your hopes up" any more than an email from an African queen who wants to wire you $20 million to get her deceased husband's funds out of the country, who promises to let you keep half, and all she needs is for you to provide her your bank account info.
