So... should I get it, or would I regret it?

I'd regret wasting $ for any lens that wasn't appropriate for why I bought it in the first place no matter how great it was.

Only you can figure out what equipment you need but the RF 100-500 is my "go to" lens 90% of the time because it's an easy carry for miles long hikes searching for birds. It's a fantastic lens for what it is and offers and love it but sure, it's not the same quality as a 600mm prime. But so what? I'm not carrying a 600mm prime + tripod for miles.

And yeah, if I had bought it for weddings, portraits or an "general purpose" lens, yes, I'd be kicking myself down the street to the hospital for a psych eval.

I also have the RF 70-200 f/4. No question the 2.8 is sharper and has cleaner, rounder bokeh, but I don't shoot sports or weddings and the f/4 is lighter and more compact, and, honestly, no slouch, just has an overachieving brother. I actually waited a few refurb sales before pushing the button for the f/4 my need for it was so infrequent. I enjoy the 70-200 f/4. Not once have I ever felt I was using a lesser lens even if it is. But if I was a sports or wedding photog, yeah, the 2.8 is a no-brainer.

+1 This pretty much sums it up for me too. I have both of the lenses that the OP is considering, and their ideal usage cases are vastly different. I've regretted the time or two that I've had the wrong one in my hands, and I think actually buying the wrong one would be devastating.

The OP needs to reflect long and hard before purchasing. Know thyself!

BTW Canon has been having amazing sales lately -- seems like almost monthly lately. I've seen the 2.8 as low as $2100 or so. I recently bought the RF 28-70 2.8 for around $1500.

The 24-70 f/2.8? Enjoy!
