Why did Canon change from EF to RF? ›

This has come about because EF-mount DSLRs had to be designed around the camera's reflex mirror mechanism, but RF-mount cameras are mirrorless, which allows lens designers to prioritise optical performance and makes new optical designs possible.

Mounting an RF lens on an EF body requires the use of an adapter. Canon introduced the RF lens mount with their mirrorless cameras, while the EF mount has been used on their DSLR bodies for many years. As a result, if you want to use an RF lens on an EF body, you will need to purchase the Canon EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.

The standard EF to RF adapter and its variant with the control ring are designed with no additional elements inside. Essentially, it's just an empty space between the lens and the camera. This means that the light passes through unhindered, preserving the optical quality of your beloved EF lenses.
